DEFINITION OF DEPENDENT FAMILY MEMBERS

In this section, we we will focus on two very important things which always create confusion:

1. Who are "Family Members"  2. Which member can be treated as "Dependent" on the Government Servant.

Who are "Family Members"

1.  Government of India's Decision No - 23, below Rule 54 (15) says that  Family Members are of two types :

CATEGORY : I
(A) Husband or Wife
(B) Son  or Daughter

CATEGORY : II
(A) Unmarried/Widowed/Divorced daughter not covered in Category I.
(B) Parents

Which member can be treated as "Dependent"

INCOME CRITERIA  & AGE -
(1) A member can be treated as dependent only if his income is less than Rs. 9000/- + DA
(2) For son/daughter - he should be unmarried
(3) For son/daughter - he should not be more than 25 years old

VERY IMPORTANT

If a person has a family, husband or wife and thereafter son/daughter shall be the first nominee. Even if other members are made first nominee, he/she will not get anything if Family in Category - I above exist.
